Oral Hygiene In Between Dental Visits

We all want our teeth to look and feel great. We want that gorgeous winning smile that you see on toothpaste commercials. Do you notice how great your teeth look and feel after having them cleaned by the dental hygienist? If you practice good oral hygiene, your teeth and gums can look and feel amazing. It’s all about what you do between regular dental visits that will make the difference.

Keeping Up Your Oral Health

Here's how you can keep your teeth and gums healthy:

  • Brush your teeth at least twice a day (after every meal is ideal) with fluoride toothpaste to remove food particles and plaque.

  • Floss between teeth at least once daily before you brush. This will loosen food particles that get stuck between teeth and help remove plaque. Then, brush your teeth clean.

  • Get the right amount of fluoride. Fluoride is a mineral that strengthens tooth enamel and helps reduce the risk of tooth decay, especially in children. The dentist will determine if fluoride treatments are needed and how often.

  • Brush your tongue gently every time you brush to remove plaque on the tongue.

  • Limit sugary and acidic foods and beverages. In the mouth, sugar turns into acid, taking its toll on tooth enamel.

  • Drink plenty of water, especially after eating meals or snacks to help wash away acids from food and beverages. Water is essential for good oral health and overall health.

  • Use mouth rinses to reduce acid in the mouth and help clean areas that toothbrushes can’t reach. Your dentist will determine which type of mouth rinse is appropriate.

  • Eliminate tobacco. Smoking causes yellow teeth, bad breath, slow healing after procedures, and increases the risk of oral cancer, gum disease, tooth decay, and tooth loss. This includes smokeless tobacco, as well.

  • Regularly exam your mouth for changes to teeth and gums. Notify your dentist immediately when you notice red or swollen gums, chipped teeth, or anything unusual.

  • Visit your dentist at least twice yearly for cleanings and checkups.
