Common Dental Emergencies

Some of the most common dental emergencies include:

  • Acute or persistent tooth pain

  • Chipped or broken teeth

  • Lost fillings or crowns

  • Abscess

  • Severe gum bleeding and swelling

  • Knocked out tooth

  • Damaged or broken braces (orthodontic appliances)

  • Injury affecting gums

  • Broken jaw

For injuries such as a knocked out tooth, timing is crucial. Immediate action is necessary for a chance of saving the tooth. Pick up the tooth without touching the root(s) and gently clean the tooth with water. If possible, place the tooth back into the socket and gently hold it in place until you arrive at the dental office or emergency room. If the tooth cannot be replanted temporarily, place it between the cheek and gum or put it in a container of cold milk. For chipped teeth, bring any broken pieces to the dental office for possible reattachment.

Preventing Dental Emergencies

Most dental emergencies can be prevented. Regular oral examinations and x-rays can help keep oral health issues from becoming dental emergencies. Protect the face and mouth during sports-related activities by wearing helmets and mouthguards. Watching what you eat and how you eat can also help prevent many dental emergencies.
